Bland is located in Sandoval County 10 miles northwest of Cochiti Lake off U.S. Forest Service Road 268 in the Santa Fe National Forest.
In the early 1890's gold and silver were discovered in the area west of Cochiti Pueblo and the Rio Grande in the Jemez Mountains. The boom town of Bland, New Mexico was established with a Post Office in 1894 named after Richard Parks Bland, who had fought against the demonetization of silver which had gained him national fame and almost a US Presidential nomination in 1896. At the turn of the century, three thousand people called Bland home with the mill running 24 hours a day seven days a week. Bland had a lusty red light district, stock exchange, over a dozen saloons, four sawmills, two banks, a school, opera house, hotel, church and miscellaneous stores set within a narrow canyon of only 60 feet wide. Production began to weaken in 1904 and1905 and soon Bland became a ghost town. Today what remains of the town and mill are on private property and forest service land.
