The Mesa takes its name from the Indians that Onate found living at the Gran Quivira Pueblo; he called the Indians Jumanos, "the striped ones" because they painted a stripe across their nose.
The Ranch is located nine miles east of Mountainair and eight miles southwest of Willard, New Mexco on Torrance County Roads B-028 and B-037. The terrain varies from open, sloping and rolling pastures to rocky out cropping and steep slopes of the Mesa de los Jumanos.
